  • “The League…Heroes” is inspired by the history and stories of blacks in baseball. Primarily, those of the negro league from 1884 to 1955. Blacks had the fortitude to create and start their own league given the climate of the time. The Negro league is would be where legends like Satchel Paige and Jackie Robinson would hone their skills. Blacks in the league would struggle to not only keep the league going as they fought financially to own stadiums/parks to play in. But they also fought to show their worth and ability to play in the major leagues. One thing that is rarely spoken about is the women of the league that played and owned teams alongside the men. Women like Olivia Taylor and Toni Stone.

This piece represents so many of the players that desired to but didn’t play in the pros. It represents the fight and champion mentality to do something they love, in the climate they were in.
